We are pleased to share with you this important news at the European level. The Danish health authorities have formally stated that users should be informed of the risk to health and safety from radiation from their cell phones that exceeds the regulatory exposure values.

Razer Phone 2

The Danish Health and Medicines Authority has become aware that the use of a specific cell phone, which as of November 2018 has been marketed in Denmark, especially in the gaming environment, can lead to the limit value being exceeded. These are cell phones of the Razer Phone 2 type. We therefore encourage users of this phone not to use the cell phone in question. We also refer to the current recommendations of the Danish Authority for Health and Medicines concerning the use of cell phones https://www.sst.dk/da/Viden/Straaling/Straaling-i-hverdagen/Mobiltelefoni-og-traadloes-teknologi/Mobiltelefoner.”

Indeed, thanks to the work of the independent Danish journalist David Wedege (in connection with Dr. Marc Arazi and our teams), the country’s authorities were questioned to find out why cell phones considered “non-compliant” by the French authorities continued to be sold on the Danish market. The journalist relied particularly on the withdrawal in France in May 2020 of the Razer Phone 2.

After several months of exchanges with the various national agencies, David Wedege allowed both the withdrawal of the Razer Phone 2 from the Danish market but also an official position of health authorities.

However, despite the position of the National Board of Health, the Danish Safety Technology Authority refuses to inform consumers using this smartphone of the health risks.

For Olle Johansson, retired associate professor at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden and member of the Phonegate Alert scientific committee:

The fact that the Danish health authorities consider that users should be informed about the human health risks and safety issues related to the radiation emitted by their cell phones, which sometimes even exceeds the regulatory exposure values, is of course a welcome step, especially considering that very few countries in the world are engaged in similar health protection information campaigns. However, it should be noted that that no Cell phones cannot today be considered as safe from a human, animal, plant or bacterial point of view. To achieve such a safe situation, much, much lower exposure levels must be achieved, perhaps as low as the natural background, and with the complete removal of the artificial nature of electromagnetic fields and signals “.

For Dr. Marc Arazi, President of the NGO Alerte Phonegate, who is delighted with this progress:

“Denmark thus becomes the second European country to take a position, still cautiously, in the industrial and health scandal of Phonegate. But what are the other national and European authorities waiting for to react? It is high time that they put an end to this overexposure of millions of users to the waves of our cell phones.

We publish below one of the recent articles that the journalist published on his blog Tab Trad

The National Health Council maintains: Consumers should be warned about using illegal smartphones

Tabt Tråd, September 22, 2020 Tabt Tråd is edited by journalists and registered with the Press Council, which is responsible for the content. This is a journalistic article.

The Danish Health and Medicines Authority believes that cross-border radiation from an illegal smartphone model poses a risk to human health and safety. Nevertheless, the responsible agency refuses to follow the recommendation of the Danish Authority for Health and Medicines.

THE SAFETY COUNCIL is issuing a marketing ban on the Razer Phone 2 smartphone model after Tabt Tråd said the cell phone with excessive radiation emissions violated Danish law, which is common in the EU.

However, the Danish Security Technology Authority will not inform Danish consumers who own a copy of the phone, the authority now tells Tabt Tråd.

This is contrary to a recommendation of the National Board of Health, which has already commented on the case in Tabt Tråd.

Desired measures against consumers

In August, Tabt Tråd presented to the Danish Health and Medicines Authority that the Danish Safety Technology Authority would not inform Danish consumers.

The Danish Authority for Health and Medicines did not immediately give its approval to the Danish Safety Technology Authority:

“The National Board of Health does not consider the exceeding of the limit value in question to be negligible. We therefore consider it important that the phone in question is not on the market in Denmark, and we therefore recommend that measures be planned for the resellers and current users of the phone in question. We have agreed to an upcoming meeting with the Danish Security Technology Authority to discuss this.”Lotte Bælum, press consultant of the Danish Health and Medical Products Authority, wrote to Tabt Tråd on August 21.

A clear call for vigilance

Tabt Tråd requested access to the documents in the following correspondence between the Danish Safety Technology Authority and the Radiation Protection Unit of the Danish Health and Medicines Authority, which took place between August 17 and September 1.

A video conversation also took place.

In an email to the Danish Safety Technology Authority, Radiation Protection Professional at the Danish Health and Medicines Authority, Anders Ravnsborg Beierholm, writes on August 17, 2020:

If the limit value is exceeded, the Danish Authority for Health and Medicines considers that the phone may pose a risk to human health and safety, and we therefore consider it important that the phone in question is not available on the market in Denmark. The marketing ban in the EU should therefore be followed at national level by a warning against the use of the phone.

“Based on the above, we would therefore like to know if the Danish Security Technology Authority is planning any measures targeting current resellers and users of the phone in question.”

Users don’t know anything

However, after the Danish Health and Medicines Authority criticized the initial decision of the Danish Safety Technology Authority, the Danish Safety Technology Authority nevertheless made another decision that does not follow the recommendation of the Danish Health and Medicines Authority.

The Danish Authority for Security Technology argues that Danish consumers should not be warned about using the phone.

When the Danish Safety Technology Authority does not want to inform Danish consumers who own a copy, it is because of the specific assessment of the product by the Danish Safety Technology Authority, Lars Niemann, the Danish Safety Technology Authority’s chief consultant, tells Tabt Tråd.

Our risk assessment indicates that there may be a long-term risk, but that there is no acute risk of physical injury. In other words, the risk is assessed as low to medium high, which we will sanction with a marketing ban that has already been executed,” writes Lars Niemann in a reply.

Now the National Health Council is not responding

Tabt Tråd asked the Danish Authority for Health and Medicines if the final decision of the Danish Safety Technology Authority not to inform consumers is satisfactory when the Danish Authority for Health and Medicines has recommended that consumers be warned against using the Razer Phone 2.

The recommendation is written both in a comment to Tabt Tråd and in internal emails to the Danish Security Technology Authority, which Tabt Tråd had access to. In an email, the National Board of Health’s press officer, Tina Guldmann Gustavsen, did not answer Tabt Tråd’s question, but gave her a piece of information that had nothing to do with the question:

“We can say that at the end of August we had a dialogue with the Danish Security Technology Authority about the challenges posed by the Razer Phone 2. The Danish Security Technology Authority said, among other things, that the Danish Health and Medicines Authority says it is monitoring the market for this second-hand phone. Just this morning, September 15, we have been informed that the Danish Security Technology Authority has become aware of some sales of used phones through market surveillance, and will contact the sellers directly to stop the sale.
