A review of the literature published on August 8, 2025 in Brain Research by an international team, mainly Chinese, confirms the link between electromagnetic fields (EMFs), including mobile phones, and the increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer’s: A scourge that is spreading worldwide without a cure
Alzheimer ‘s disease now affects more than 55 million people worldwide. This figure is expected to rise to 152 million by 2050. This neurological disease, which is incurable to date, leads to the progressive and irreversible loss of mental functions, and in particular memory.
In France, nearly 1.4 million people will be living with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disease in 2025. In the United States, more than 7 million Americans are affected, a number that could double by 2060.
Younger and younger population affected
Alarmingly, early dementia (before the age of 65) is exploding worldwide. Between 1990 and 2021, its prevalence jumped by 211% and its incidence by 216%.
Globally, cases have increased from 3.7 million in 1990 to 7.8 million in 2021.
In France, there are about 33,000 cases of Alzheimer’s and related diseases in people under 65 years of age. Of these, 5,000 patients are under 60 years old.
Electromagnetic fields: a confirmed risk factor
The study identifies two types of electromagnetic field (EMF) sources:
- High frequencies : mobile phones, Wi-Fi routers, smart meters
- Low Frequencies: Power Lines
Demonstrated biological mechanisms
The researchers describe the “calcium hypothesis”: EMFs disrupt voltage-gated calcium channels in neurons. This deregulation leads to:
- Oxidative stress and neuronal inflammation
- Accumulation of β-amyloid plaques, characteristic of Alzheimer’s
- Loss of synaptic connections after chronic exposure
Animal studies show that rats exposed to EMFs on a daily basis develop high levels of amyloid plaques.
Alarming synergistic effect
The study points out that EMFs are not the only cause. Other environmental pollutants contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s:
- Heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury)
- Fine particulate matter PM2.5
- Artificial nanomaterials
The combined exposure greatly amplifies the risks. These synergistic interactions represent a major health threat for urban populations.
Alzheimer’s disease: Health emergency
“This study confirms our repeated warnings since 2016,” says Dr. Marc Arazi, founder of Phonegate Alert.
” Faced with the evolution of Alzheimer’s disease and its onset at an increasingly early age, we can no longer ignore this environmental risk factor. This research shows that cell phones and EMFs are involved in the aggregation of toxic proteins in the brain. With 5 billion mobile users worldwide and a daily exposure of several hours, the potential health impact is major. »
